About

A Notary Public is a person authorized by the state government to serve as an impartial witness in performing a variety of official acts related to the signing of important documents. Notaries are expected to follow written rules without the exercise of significant personal discretion, as would otherwise be the case with a “judicial” official. Some notarizations also require the Notary to put the signer under an oath, declaring under penalty of perjury that the information contained in a document is true and correct. Property deeds, wills and powers of attorney are examples of documents that commonly require a Notary.

Requirements

18 or older. Notary certification is granted by the state and the cost is generally less than $100. Once you’re certified, you can charge your own fee to notarize documents, or become a loan signing agent overseeing mortgage signings in your spare time.

Tips

Attend networking meetings in your area. Join your local Chamber of Commerce-adds credibility to your business and your branding strategy. Network with local mail delivery services. Join a Notary professional organization. Post a profile on Notary websites. Develop a business page on social media.
